Former Prime Minister Bhutto was assassinated earlier today by a gunmen who struck her neck and torso. A few moments after the gunshots rang out a motorcycle driver laden with bombs blew himself up near Bhutto’s armoured car, killing 15 to 20 of her supporters.
Bhutto herself wasn’t always a peachy character. Her legacy is wrapped with accusations of corruption, and it’s by no surpise that one of the many assassination attempts against her finally succeeded.
What this assassination means for Pakistan’s future is unclear, only time will tell how a country of 150 million people and maybe the size of New England and New York combined will endure into the future.
While the pundits from here to Karachi will be explamoring for President Musharrif’s expedited removal from power, it remains very likely that whoe ever carried out this assassination wasn’t in ailgnment with Musharrif. I find it very likely that the ISI, or Pakistan’s Intelligence Force, carried out the attack. ISI has been known in the past to work closely with jihadi elements to carry out terrorist attacks. In the meantime a spokesperson for Al-Qaeda, for what a spokesperson for a terrorist group is worth, has already claimed Al-Qaeda’s responsibility for the attack.
You can either expect large protests and many more deaths to come, or maybe all of Bhutto’s supporters will go the more conventional stages of grief route, and we won’t see any rock throwing for a good while.
