For those less fortune in the realm of knowledge, Titan is a celestial object that orbits Saturn, comparable to the size of Earth (I think a little smaller though). This Space.com report details the amount of methane, ethane, and other organic molecules that abound on Titan.
At one point in history it might actually become more economically viable to build a couple billion dollar robotic space ship to go to Titan and extract the energy producing molecules that we need rather then find it here on Earth. Finding it may actually become impossible one day (most likely a day a century or more away) because all the experts agree that at one point Earth will not have any collectible supplies of carbon fuels (i.e. Oil).
Researchers took data from the Cassini spacecraft, currently in orbit around Saturn, which has mapped 20% of Titan’s surface, and found that dozens of Titan’s lakes in just this 20% viewing could equal the energy equivalent of the all the natural gas reserves on Earth.
Hopefully in the future we won’t have to rely on carbon fuels to run our lives, but being a pessimist I don’t think that will happen.
