The AP is reporting that America is making sure that the Egyptians tell Hamas to stop lobbing rockets into Israel and therein Israel would not incur into Gaza. Hamas officials met with Egyptian intelligence officials in the Egyptian city of el-Arish, whilst in another part of the country, David Welch, the U.S. Middle East Envoy was meeting with the Egyptian Foreign Minister and Intelligence Chief. So, basically the Egyptian Intelligence Agency is the middle man; imagine Hamas in one room with an intelligence official, whose on the phone, and another room where there is an American Diplomat with an another intelligence official, whose on the phone with the first intel guy - completely ridiculous.
The U.S. backed “lets-have-calm” talks is a new step for this country. It is American Law that prohibits this country from negotiating or even talking to known and recognized terrorist organizations. To circumvent this Law by means of another nation is disingenuous, at the least.
However what the hell else are we suppose to do with Hamas whose organization members are the dully elected representatives of the people of Gaza?
What strikes me as odd about this whole scenario unfolding before us, is not that we are backing peace talks with terrorists (we’ve done that before), but rather it is that we are using Egypt as our go between. Egypt is the only Arab nation to make Peace with Israel, and on the flip side Hamas has consistently blown up the border wall that separates Gaza from Egypt, allowing the Egypt’s sovereignty to be violated by the mass number of Gazans who flow across the border (and weapons that exchange there no doubt). Hamas and Egypt don’t exactly have a rosy relationship, so why would we think that Hamas will listen to what Egypt has to say?
If the point of the peace talks is to negotiate a cease-fire, you can throw it next to the dozen or so other cease-fires who take up residence next to their neighbors - the piles of dead bodies who saw the great affect to which those other cease-fires had.
